One of the best occasions in the coffee cultivation calendar is during harvesting. This is a season when green coffee cherries turn wine red in colour. In Kenya, high altitude regions (between 1400 – 2000m above sea level ) that cultivate arabica coffee, experience harvesting between 2 seasons .
Early crop : May – July
Main crop : October – Mid January
During main crop, majority of the coffee bushes have attained maximum riped red-wine coffee cherries that is contrast to early crop. While harvesting is a fun activity, it is also labour intensive. Within smallholder farmers, family members can be seen supporting each other . On average, a well fed coffee tree can produce between 15 – 20 kg coffee cherries.
On the 16th of December 2017, Connect coffee company will launch a pilot coffee farm tour programme to Kiambu : Mr. Daniel Kamiri’s farm. This tour is meant to support partner farmer in coffee harvesting while enjoying coffee experience. Connect coffee targets 20 participants with whom together they will facilitate the event .
