Kenya coffee is known for its fully washed quality taking centre stage in the worlds specialty coffee market. However, less has been tried and reviewed for the experimental – natural processed coffee largely classified as low grade “Mbuni” coffee in Kenya. As part of Connect Coffee Kenya direct trade sourcing model with select co-operatives, these experimental have proven to be competitive and highly sough after.
Oldonyo Sapuk, an outpost farm within Lukenya hills was the experimental farm for the2020 late crop. With over 5ha of land, the facility which includes a small resort cultivated 1,800 stems of both traditional SL28 and hybrid coffee varieties Ruiru 11. 80% of the land was under irrigation due to the hot weather while working closely with the local community to manage the crop under the seed to cup model.
Despite its relatively medium altitude of 1600masl, best practices with close monitoring during post-harvesting, ensured optimum quality was achieved.
